Lucky for you, Local SEO Suite is here with another guide. This time it’s about How to Optimize Google My Business Profiles.
Google My Business (now Google Business Profiles) is a free tool provided by Google that allows you to manage your presence on Google search and Google Maps. Today more than 85% of Google search pages include localized search results include the local pack and map.
Searches for products and services in your area show local search results pages like the example above. Learning how to optimize Google My Business Profiles is important for appearing highly on Google Maps and in the Local Pack.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) provides searchers with important and relevant information about your business that can help them take the first steps in decision to work with you.
Your GBP includes the following components:
Each of these components is important to ensuring an optimized Google Business Profile. It’s important to note that each of the components have different weightings within the Google ranking algorithm, which we will explore in a moment.
Understanding how to properly optimize your Google Business Profile is key to ranking #1 in the Local Pack and on Google Maps.
With millions of people using Google Search and Maps daily to discover local businesses, a well-optimized profile greatly increases your chances of capturing their attention—and converting them into customers.
By refining and enhancing your profile, you ensure your business appears in more relevant searches while standing out with accurate, engaging, and trust-building information.
Optimization becomes especially crucial in highly competitive industries or crowded markets. The more saturated your niche or service area is, the more important it is to have a fully optimized Google Business Profile—because without it, you’re likely to be overlooked by potential customers entirely.
This is particularly vital if your business relies on attracting customers within a local radius—typically within 10 to 20 miles of your storefront, office, or service area.
It’s even more important for multi-location businesses—whether across town or across the country. When done correctly, GBP optimization creates powerful network effects that amplify visibility and customer trust for each location.
Even if you operate a single-location or small business, optimizing your Google Business Profile should be a foundational part of your overall local SEO strategy. It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to increase your visibility, credibility, and conversion potential in 2025 and beyond.
Proximity, Relevance, and Prominence are the three core factors that influence how highly your Google Business Profile ranks in local search results.
When someone performs a local search on Google, the results page changes. Instead of standard organic listings, users are shown a map highlighting businesses nearby, along with a structured list of 3 to 4 featured business profiles — known as the Local Pack.
But Google isn’t just showing nearby businesses by default. It aims to display the best possible options based on a user’s intent. That’s where the Google Business Profile Ranking Algorithm (GBPRA) comes into play.
This algorithm determines whether or not your business will appear in the Local Pack and on Google Maps for a given search term.
Your profile’s ranking is influenced by several factors that can be optimized within the Google Business Profile itself. By improving these elements, you can significantly boost your visibility for the specific search terms and locations that matter most to your business.
The most critical components of the GBPRA are Proximity (how close your business is to the searcher), Relevance (how closely your profile matches the search intent), and Prominence (how authoritative or established your business appears online). These three factors are the foundation for optimizing any Google Business Profile for stronger local search performance.
Proximity refers to the physical distance between the searcher’s location and the business address. Generally, the closer a business is to the user at the time of the search, the more likely it is to appear in the local search results.
Among the core ranking factors, Proximity is the least controllable, since you can’t influence where a user is searching from. While defining service areas in your profile can slightly help broaden your reach, the impact is limited. That’s why, when optimizing your Google Business Profile, it’s more effective to focus on Relevance and Prominence, which are directly within your control and can greatly improve your local visibility.
Relevance measures how closely the information in your Google Business Profile aligns with what the user is searching for. Google evaluates key elements like your business name, category, service areas, as well as listed products and services to determine how relevant your listing is to a specific search query.
In addition, Google pulls in contextual data from other sources — including customer reviews and content found on your linked website — to strengthen its understanding of your business. These matching keywords and details may appear as structured snippets within your local pack listing, helping it stand out and attract more clicks from potential customers.
Prominence refers to how well-known and authoritative your business appears online. Google evaluates factors like the quantity and quality of reviews on your Google Business Profile, as well as the domain authority of your associated website.
When we say Google wants to showcase the best business for each search, we mean it. And in the digital world, two of the most powerful signals of authority are positive reviews and high-quality backlinks.
Boosting both will strengthen your online reputation — and can elevate your business to the top of the Local Pack faster than you can crack open a coconut with a karate chop!
Now that you understand how Google ranks business profiles, let’s walk through the key steps to properly optimize your Google Business Profile for better local search performance.
Learning how to optimize Google My Business profiles is not rocket science. At Local SEO Suite, we have built a simple 10 step process that will take your profile from barren to fully optimized.
Intimidated? Don’t be! We’re here to walk you through every step, making it easy for you to swing on in.
Let’s Get Started:
The first step to optimizing your Google Business Profile is to claim the listing you want to manage and improve.
If your profile is already verified, congratulations — you’ve already claimed it, and you can move straight to Step 2.
However, if you don’t yet have a Google Business Profile, you’ll need to claim or create one before any optimization can take place. To do that, visit google.com/business, sign in using your Google account, and follow the prompts to add your business name and location.
Keep in mind: if Google requires postcard verification, you may need to wait around 3–5 business days to receive it and complete the verification process. Only after this step can you begin optimizing your profile for better visibility.

Your profile logo (avatar) and cover image are two of the most visible elements across your Google Business Profile. They serve as visual identifiers of your brand and appear prominently across Google Search, Google Maps, and other Google services.
The logo avatar is typically the first image a user sees when your profile appears in search results. The cover photo is the second image users notice when viewing your full profile on Google Maps or desktop.
That’s why it’s critical to use high-quality, properly formatted images for both. At Local SEO Suite, we recommend centering your logo or visual mark to ensure it displays correctly across all of Google’s layouts and devices.
Logo (Avatar): Ideal size is 1000×1000 px, square format. Minimum accepted is 500×500 px.
Cover Image: Ideal size is 1024×575 px, with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
If no logo has been uploaded, Google may automatically select an image from your profile’s photos — which may not represent your brand professionally. Setting a custom logo and cover ensures consistency and helps your business stand out.

Images play a crucial role in creating a fully optimized Google Business Profile.
There’s no denying that business listings with photos perform significantly better and drive more engagement. In fact, according to Google, profiles with images receive 42% more requests for driving directions on Google Maps.
Additionally, Google Business Profiles that include photos see 35% more website click-throughs compared to those without. That’s a huge opportunity for increased traffic and potential customers that you don’t want to miss!
There are several types of images you can upload to specific sections within your profile, including:
Exterior photos
Interior photos
Team photos
“At work” photos
Brand identity images
You can also add general business images such as product shots, before-and-after photos, awards, and other relevant visuals that showcase your services.
To ensure the best quality, we recommend following these image guidelines:
Format: JPG or PNG
File size: Between 10 KB and 5 MB
Recommended resolution: 720 x 720 pixels
Minimum resolution: 250 x 250 pixels
Before uploading, it’s also a good idea to geotag your photos by embedding location data. This extra step helps Google better understand where and what your images depict, which can boost their visibility in Google Image Search. (Note: geotagging does not directly influence your Google Business Profile ranking.)
Finally, don’t underestimate the power of visuals in helping customers recognize and choose your business. Exterior photos make it easier for visitors to spot your location, while interior photos create an inviting atmosphere that can entice customers to walk in instead of visiting a competitor down the street. Plus, showcasing new or popular products through your images can give your profile an Instagram-worthy appeal, taking your local presence to the next level.
Looking to boost your Google Business Profile with authentic customer photos? Try running a fun and engaging contest that encourages your customers to snap and upload pictures of your business. Offer a free service, gift card, or special prize to your favorite submission as a thank-you. After all, nothing motivates people quite like the chance to win something for free — and user-generated photos add powerful social proof that can attract even more customers!
Alright, now we’re really splitting coconuts and peeling bananas! It’s time to get to the juicy part—your profile details. All this talk about fruit is making me hungry.
By this stage, you should have a visually appealing Google Business Profile. If not, at least you’ve made sure your profile has all the essential images—because hey, every great journey starts with a single step.
Step 4 is where you update every piece of business information on your profile. This is crucial, as Google relies heavily on this data to decide if your profile should appear in relevant local searches.
Below, we’ve shared some of our top tips to help you optimize each field for maximum visibility and impact.
The Business Name field is one of the most influential parts of your Google Business Profile when it comes to ranking — but it’s also a common cause of suspensions if misused.
While many believe that adding keywords or location names directly into the business name will boost rankings, this practice violates Google’s guidelines. If Google or even a Local Guide spots keyword stuffing in your business name, your profile risks suspension.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend using your exact, official business name only. If you’re eager to include keywords for SEO purposes, the proper way is to legally change your business name first — then you can safely update the Business Name field without risking suspension.
Choosing the right categories for your Google Business Profile is a crucial step to ensure your listing appears for the most relevant local searches.
The Business Category you select directly impacts which searches will trigger your profile in the Local Pack and on Google Maps. For example, consider a dermatologist who also offers cosmetic injectable treatments but struggles to show up in related searches.
Most people searching for cosmetic injectable services typically find profiles categorized under Med Spa, not Dermatologist. So, if you want to appear in those search results, selecting the correct category is essential.
Your Primary Category should clearly reflect your main business focus — the service or product you want to be known for most. You can also add Secondary Categories if you provide multiple services or products.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend adding between 3 to 5 additional categories, but be careful not to overdo it. While the Primary Category carries the most weight in search visibility, the Secondary Categories help broaden the range of searches where your profile can appear.
The Business Description is your chance to introduce potential customers to your business in a way that’s both informative and persuasive. When someone lands on your Google Business Profile, this section helps encourage them to take action—whether that’s calling you, visiting your website, or stopping by in person.
While the Business Description doesn’t have a huge direct impact on rankings, Google often displays snippets from it within the Local Pack. So, it’s important to craft a description that is detailed and engaging, without overloading it with keywords.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend focusing on what makes your business unique and highlighting your key selling points. Naturally include relevant keywords, but avoid keyword stuffing—it should feel like a genuine introduction, not a piñata packed full of candy!
The Opening Date on your Google Business Profile gives searchers insight into how long your business has been operating.
Longevity often signals reliability and success, which can encourage potential customers to trust and engage with more established businesses.
If your business has been around for years, be sure to showcase this as a strength.
However, if your business is relatively new, there’s no need to stress—Google typically does not highlight this information prominently in search results.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend using the actual date of incorporation or the date your location opened. Avoid setting unrealistic dates like 1492—there’s no SEO benefit in doing so.
The Contact Information section lets you provide essential details for your Google Business Profile. This includes your business phone number, website URL, and social media links. Depending on your industry, you may also have options to add links for menus, booking services, or virtual care platforms, making it easier for customers to connect and engage with your business directly.
The Phone Number field might seem straightforward, but from years of hands-on experience, we’ve uncovered some valuable insights worth sharing.
While using your regular business phone number is perfectly fine, at Local SEO Suite we recommend utilizing a dedicated tracking phone number. This is because many customers prefer to dial the number displayed on your profile directly, rather than tapping the call button. As a result, your actual call volume from Google Business Profile listings can be 3 to 5 times higher than what Google Analytics or other reporting tools indicate.
Beyond just tracking call volume, using a dedicated number allows you to record and analyze calls, giving you deeper insights into lead quality and helping identify which inquiries convert into paying customers. This information is crucial for fine-tuning your marketing efforts and improving overall customer service.
The Website or Webpage URL field is one of the most crucial elements of your Google Business Profile. This is because Google’s ranking algorithm factors in the authority of the page linked in this field.
Domain Authority—a term familiar to SEOs—is a measure of the quality and quantity of backlinks pointing to a website or specific webpage. Both Google and SEO professionals use this metric to assess how much weight a site carries in search rankings for relevant queries.
Simply put, the higher the authority of the associated website or webpage, the better the chances your Google Business Profile will rank for targeted local searches.
For most businesses, we recommend linking to the homepage of your website. However, if you have multiple locations or service providers, it’s best to use the webpage most closely related to that specific location or provider.
And remember the golden rule of SEO: Always Be Link Building (ABLB). Consistently earning quality backlinks will strengthen your website’s authority and help your Google Business Profile climb higher in search results.
In addition to your regular business hours, you can also add special hours for holidays and special events to your Google Business Profile, ensuring your customers always have the most accurate information.
The Business Hours section helps potential customers know exactly when you’re available—whether they want to call, visit, or book an appointment.
Make sure your listed hours reflect your actual operating times. Plus, take advantage of the option to add temporary or holiday hours to keep your profile current during seasonal changes or special occasions.
At Local SEO Suite, we suggest experimenting with your business hours to see if extending them boosts calls and website traffic. After all, if your competitors are open 24/7 and you’re only available 9 to 5, guess who’s getting more customer inquiries?
Service Areas play a vital role in telling Google where your business offers services and helps determine when your profile should appear in relevant local searches.
This field lets you specify the geographic regions—whether by city, neighborhood, or postal code—where you want your Google Business Profile to show up. You can add up to 20 service areas to better target the locations you serve.
By listing cities and neighborhoods within a reasonable driving distance from your business, you increase the chances of appearing in search results when potential customers look for services like yours in nearby areas.
Service Areas are especially important for Service Area Business (SAB) profiles, which typically don’t display a physical storefront but serve customers across a wider radius. If you don’t specify your service areas, your business likely won’t show up in searches beyond your immediate location.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend setting 3 to 5 core service areas. If you’re in a low-competition or sparsely populated region, you might add more. But beware—adding dozens of service areas won’t magically skyrocket your rankings. Instead, it’s more likely you’ll get metaphorically “hit on the head with a coconut.” Focus on quality over quantity to maximize your local reach.
Setting up Messaging is another powerful way to optimize your Google Business Profile for maximum customer engagement and conversions. This feature allows users to send messages directly to business owners or managers through the profile.
Think of Messaging as a blend of text messaging and email—but it happens right inside your Google Business Profile. Customers can also reach you via the Google Maps app, making it super convenient for them to get in touch on the go.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend enabling Messaging only if you can respond promptly—or if you have a reliable team (or trusted service like us) managing those messages for you. Quick responses boost customer trust and increase your chances of converting inquiries into sales.
For industries like hospitality, restaurants, healthcare, and related fields, Google offers the valuable feature of integrating online bookings and reservations directly into your Google Business Profile. This seamless integration allows potential customers to book appointments or reserve tables quickly—without the need to call or navigate away to your website.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend enabling these online booking and reservation options whenever they’re available for your industry and compatible with the platforms you use. Doing so not only improves customer convenience but also increases your chances of converting searchers into confirmed clients or guests.
For restaurants and many health-related service providers, Google offers a Menu feature within your Google Business Profile that lets you showcase your menu items directly on your listing.
By adding your menu—whether it’s food items or services—you not only make your profile more attractive but also boost your visibility for search queries related to those specific offerings. This means potential customers can quickly see what you provide without having to click through multiple pages.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend taking full advantage of this native Menu function whenever it’s available. Similar to the Products and Services section, Google associates the items listed in your menu with relevant user searches, which can result in increased exposure and higher engagement for your profile.
Services on your Google Business Profile function much like pages on your website and play a crucial role in optimizing your profile for service-specific search queries.
Once your core business information is fully optimized, the next step is to enrich your profile by adding detailed content that boosts your visibility for related searches.
The first place to start is by adding your services. Using the Services section on your Google Business Profile, you can list each service your business offers. These services often appear prominently on your Business Profile’s Knowledge Panel, providing an engaging element that encourages users to click and learn more.
Including services on your profile works similarly to organic SEO—when you list your offerings clearly, your profile becomes more likely to show up for searches related to those specific services.
For each service, you can specify a Service Name, Price, and Description. Additionally, you can organize services into different categories, which is especially useful if you offer a wide range of services or have multiple variations of the same service.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend creating individual service listings for every offering—both branded and generic—while ensuring your profile is accurately categorized to maximize search relevance.
Products on your Google Business Profile function much like pages on your website and help optimize your profile for product- and service-based search queries.
If your business isn’t primarily service-oriented, you can add Products to your profile to showcase what you offer. Even if you don’t sell physical products, you can list your services as products within this section.
Much like Services, each Product listing can include a Product Title, Price, Description, and an Image. You can also link each product to a specific webpage and organize products into categories for better navigation.
Products appear prominently about halfway down your Business Profile’s Knowledge Panel. Adding products has been shown to increase profile visibility for related searches, making it a valuable optimization tool.
Though this feature is relatively new and doesn’t carry the same SEO weight as traditional website content, at Local SEO Suite, we recommend creating a product listing for every item or service you offer. Additionally, including generic product names alongside branded ones (for example, “Nike Shoes,” “Red Nike Shoes,” and “Red Shoes”) can help capture broader search queries and improve overall reach.
Questions & Answers (Q&A) is an excellent feature that allows potential customers to discover key information about your business—information they might otherwise have to search for on your website or by contacting you directly.
Your Google Business Profile isn’t just a static directory listing; it’s packed with dynamic features designed to enhance customer experience. One such feature is Q&A, where any Google user can ask questions about your business that appear publicly on your profile. You then have the opportunity to respond, providing helpful and accurate information.
The purpose of this function is to give potential customers quick answers, saving them time and reducing unnecessary inquiries.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend proactively seeding your profile with questions and answers using your own Google account. Aim to have at least 10 Q&As live on your profile, but ideally, you can add 20 to 30 of the most common questions customers ask each week. This approach builds trust and positions your business as responsive and customer-focused.

Google Business Profile (GBP) Posts are a powerful tool to increase engagement by sharing timely offers, events, educational content, and other clickable updates directly on your profile.
Posts are one of the most eye-catching elements of your GBP, providing fresh, relevant information that can capture the attention of searchers right when they find your business.
Use GBP Posts to promote everything from special sales and in-store promotions to new product launches and upcoming events. These updates not only keep your profile dynamic but also encourage potential customers to click through and take action.
For most businesses, posting at least once a week is a solid strategy to stay visible and relevant. Some businesses go even further, posting multiple times a week with coupon codes, news, and announcements to consistently engage their audience and drive more traffic.

Some businesses receive thousands of reviews on their Google Business Profile every year, making review management a crucial aspect of local SEO success.
Responding to and managing reviews is one of the most important parts of optimizing your Google Business Profile. Google doesn’t just aim to show businesses that are nearby—they want to showcase the best businesses in the area.
Online and within the Local Pack, this means that businesses with a high volume of positive reviews gain a competitive edge. Reviews factor heavily into Google’s Prominence ranking algorithm, so the more glowing five-star reviews you have compared to your competitors, the higher your profile is likely to rank.
Generating consistent five-star reviews should be a top priority for every business. But it’s not enough just to collect reviews—you also need to actively respond to them. While replying to reviews doesn’t directly improve your rankings, it significantly increases customer engagement and serves as a powerful post-sale marketing tool by showing appreciation to those who took the time to provide feedback.
At Local SEO Suite, we recommend aiming for a minimum of 31 positive five-star reviews on your profile. In highly competitive markets or industries—like New York City or plumbing services—you may need 10 to 100 times that number to stand out. That’s why investing in a professional review management and solicitation service can be a game changer for your local business.
To effectively measure what happens after someone interacts with your Google Business Profile and visits your website, it’s essential to implement proper tracking. One of the best ways to do this is by adding Google Analytics UTM tracking codes to the URLs included in your profile.
The most common places to add these tracking parameters are your Website URL and URLs used in your Google Posts. You can also apply UTM tags to secondary booking links, menu URLs (if applicable), and other relevant links on your profile.
To take your tracking a step further, consider using a call tracking phone number as the primary Business Phone Number on your profile. Call tracking lets you capture all calls generated through your profile—including those made by users who dial the number directly rather than clicking the call button.
At Local SEO Suite, we highly recommend combining UTM tracking with call tracking numbers. This approach gives you a comprehensive view of how your Google Business Profile contributes to your business’s revenue, profits, and overall return on investment.

And hey, if you have more than one Google Business Profile for your business, stick around — we’ve got some juicy tips to help you make the most out of all those bananas.
If you’re faced with the challenging task of managing multiple—or even hundreds—of Google Business Profiles, Local SEO Suite has gathered valuable tips from years of experience helping multi-location clients climb to the top of the local pack and dominate Google Maps.
Here are some key considerations to keep in mind when optimizing Google Business Profiles for multi-location businesses. These insights will help you streamline management, boost visibility, and maximize the impact of each location’s profile.
Here are some things to consider when learning how to optimize Google My Business profiles for multi-location businesses.
Make sure every detail in your Google Business Profiles for each location is fully completed. This includes the business name, address, phone number, website, hours of operation, and all other relevant information.
A common issue we see with multi-location businesses is that profiles are either claimed but not verified, or verified but left unoptimized. This means a lot of missed opportunities—and a lot of bananas left uncollected on the scale.
The more profiles you manage effectively, the more calls and traffic your business can generate from Google. For multi-location businesses, it’s crucial to ensure every profile is properly optimized and actively maintained to maximize your local presence and customer engagement.
Duplicate listings can create confusion for both Google and potential customers. It’s essential to ensure that there is only one listing for each business location. Duplicate profiles are a common problem for well-known brands and can lead to profile suspensions, as Google strictly prohibits multiple listings for the same physical location on Maps.
To prevent or resolve this issue, regularly search your brand name along with relevant geographic areas on Google Maps to identify any duplicates. Alternatively, you can hire a professional service or use specialized software tools to scan and detect duplicate profiles across your locations.
It’s important to maintain consistency in key details across all your business locations—especially your brand name. For example, if one profile uses “Acme Tech” and another uses “Acme Tech Company,” this inconsistency can confuse both Google and potential customers.
For businesses with multiple locations clustered within a small geographic area, adding a specific neighborhood, village, or district name to the business name can help differentiate each profile and make them easier to identify. Keep in mind, however, that Google’s guidelines don’t always allow modifying business names in this way, so proceed carefully and ensure compliance to avoid penalties.
The categories selected for each Google Business Profile play a crucial role in determining which search queries will trigger that profile to appear in local search results. When managing multiple profiles, using distinct but relevant categories across them allows you to target a broader range of searches without overlap.
This strategy became especially important after Google’s 2021 diversity update, which limited how often a single business can appear multiple times in the Local Pack or on Google Maps within the same geographic area.
For example, a law firm’s main office profile should be categorized simply as “Law Firm,” while individual attorney profiles can focus on their specialties, such as “Divorce Attorney” or “Workers Compensation Attorney.” This approach helps each profile target unique search terms.
This tactic also works well in industries like healthcare, medical services, retail, and trades, allowing multi-location or multi-service businesses to maximize their visibility across different search categories.
Always use a local phone number for each Google Business Profile rather than a centralized toll-free or call center number. Local numbers make your listings appear more authentic and relevant to nearby customers. Additionally, they make tracking return on investment (ROI) by location much simpler and more accurate.
The same principle applies to addresses—ensure that each profile uses the precise local street address whenever possible. This is especially important if your locations are close to each other but fall within different cities, towns, or neighborhoods. Accurate local details help both Google and customers distinguish between your locations clearly.
For businesses with multiple locations, creating dedicated, localized web pages for each site is highly advantageous. Linking these specific pages to their corresponding Google Business Profiles helps reinforce local relevance.
Google often pulls information from the linked webpage and displays it directly in the Local Pack, sometimes showing phrases like, “This website mentions…” beneath your listing.
This extra layer of detail sets your profile apart from competitors and can significantly increase the chances that potential customers will click through or call. The more tailored and relevant the content on your location-specific pages, the better your profile’s performance in local search results.
Each Google Business Profile allows you to add a description specific to that business location. Avoid simply copying and pasting a generic “about us” across all locations.
If a particular location offers unique services, features, or advantages, be sure to highlight those details. Doing so helps potential customers decide which of your nearby locations best fits their needs and encourages more informed, confident choices.
Use Google Posts to share promotions, events, news, or updates that are specific to each location. This keeps your listings fresh and relevant to local searches, giving potential customers compelling reasons to engage with your profile when they find you on Google Maps or in the Local Pack.
Posting location-specific offers also helps prevent customer frustration—avoiding situations where someone drives to a nearby store only to discover that a regional or national promotion isn’t available there. These mismatched expectations can sometimes lead to negative reviews, so clear, targeted communication is key.
Balancing countless responsibilities—from high-level strategy to day-to-day customer engagement—leaves little time for the detailed, yet crucial task of optimizing your Google Business Profile.
